commerce assignment

Commerce assignment eBay originated in America. It was founded on September 3rd 1995 by a computer programmer from Iran, Pierre Omidyar. It is an online shopping site where people can buy and sell goods and services. It is now spread globally. It is extremely popular and many people do most of their shopping on eBay. The method of selling is by auction and there are three different kinds of auction used. They are auction-style listings where a seller is allowed to offer 1 or more items for sale for a limited number of days. Another method is Fixed Price auction where the seller offers the item at a Buy It Now price. If buyers agree to pay that price they win the item. The third method is the Dutch auction where the seller can offer identical items and bidders can bid for one or more items. Even though eBay is a commonly used online retailing site it has a number of advantages and disadvantages. Advantages: Some of the reasons that make eBay so successful are: People can bid at any time of the day and from any part of the world. People enjoy the competition of outbidding others in the auctions so many people are attracted to this form of shopping. Because of the large number of bidders it makes it likely to sell more and therefore it is often possible to obtain cheaper prices. The sellers are also attracted by the lower cost connected with selling on eBay. Disadvantages: Sometimes criminals are involved with selling stolen goods online. Consumers need to be very careful when buying online because the descriptions of the items are not always thorough, photographs may not show the true state of the item or they may not ask enough questions of the seller. This could lead them to buy goods that are not good quality or what they really want. Many big retailers cannot sell as cheaply as online auction sellers because of their high overhead costs so they want information made public about online sellers. One of the main disadvantages of online retailing is fraud. This takes a number of different forms.

1. Receiving payment and not shipping item. 2. deliberately shipping faulty merchandise 3. Selling stolen goods deliberately 4. sending things different to what was described 5. charging more for shipping and postage than is necessary Commerce assignment: Prohibited and restricted Items: • Live items (such as animals) • Alcohol • Tobacco • Nazi things • Firearms and ammunition • Teachers textbooks • Certain copyright items • Lottery tickets • Used underwear
